Nous appelons à un important investissement pour une transition protéique rapide, pour faire de l'Europe un leader mondial des protéines durables : à base de plantes, issues d'une fermentation de précision ou de viandes et de produits laitiers cultivés.
L'agriculture animale, qui est la principale cause de perte de biodiversité dans le monde et qui contribue largement aux émissions de gaz à effet de serre, requiert notre attention.
A l'aube d'une nouvelle révolution technologique et alimentaire, l'Europe se trouve à la croisée des chemins.
Nous avons le choix : utiliser le potentiel des nouvelles protéines durables ou rester à la traîne alors que le reste du monde prend de l'avance.
Environ 35 % des terres habitables dans le monde sont utilisées pour l'élevage, soit plus que l'ensemble de nos forêts.
La production de protéines durables est plus efficace que l'élevage traditionnel, car elle nécessite moins d'eau, moins de cultures céréalières, moins d'engrais et moins de terres.
La demande de viande exerce des pressions extrêmes sur des écosystèmes anciens tels que l'Amazonie.
La production durable de protéines nous offre une voie à suivre. Elle englobe trois domaines cruciaux d'innovation :
fermentation de précision, viande de culture et aliments d'origine végétale.
Ces technologies révolutionnaires ont le potentiel de réduire considérablement les effets secondaires négatifs de l'agriculture animale traditionnelle à grande échelle.
L'élevage d'un poulet nécessite plus de soja qu'un substitut de poulet à base de soja.
Protéines durables ?
Dans un monde confronté à d'importants défis environnementaux, l'émergence des protéines durables marque un tournant décisif vers un système alimentaire plus durable et plus éthique.
Ces sources de protéines innovantes offrent des alternatives prometteuses aux produits traditionnels d'origine animale, réduisant l'impact sur l'environnement et promouvant une approche plus saine et plus empathique de la production alimentaire.

À base de plantes
Il ne s'agit pas d'un bon vieux hamburger végétarien. Ces produits innovants, dont certains sont déjà sur le marché, sont fabriqués à partir d'ingrédients tels que les légumineuses, les céréales et les légumes.
Ces viandes d'origine végétale offrent des alternatives appétissantes qui reproduisent le goût, la texture et le profil nutritionnel de la viande et des produits laitiers traditionnels.
Fermentation de précision
La fermentation de précision est une technologie de pointe qui exploite la puissance des micro-organismes pour produire des protéines biologiquement identiques à celles que l'on trouve dans les produits animaux.
Elle a également déjà fait ses preuves, avec des applications dans la production à l'échelle mondiale de produits essentiels tels que l'insuline, la présure et l'acide citrique.
Viande cultivée
Parfois considérée comme le Saint-Graal des alternatives à la viande, la viande de culture représente une avancée révolutionnaire dans la production de protéines durables.
Grâce à un processus qui consiste à cultiver mettre en culture des cellules animales dans un bioréacteur, la vraie viande est produite sans qu'il soit nécessaire d'élever et d'abattre des animaux.
* Il est également possible de combiner ces approches. Par exemple, une tranche de bacon à base de plantes pourrait contenir des graisses de porc produites par fermentation de précision pour ajouter de la saveur et des odeurs.
La fermentation de précision, en particulier, est incroyablement prometteuse car elle nous permet de créer des protéines identiques à celles que l'on trouve dans la viande et les produits laitiers.
Les levures nous permettent de produire des substituts sans animaux qui fondent, sentent et ont le même goût que les vrais produits.
Les avantages de la transition protéique sont immenses. En adoptant des protéines durables, nous pouvons réduire de 92 % l'impact de la production de viande sur le climat.

D'un point de vue économique, un secteur des protéines durables pleinement déployé pourrait ajouter 1,1 mille milliards de dollars en valeur et créer jusqu'à 9,8 millions d'emplois verts dans le monde d'ici à 2050.
Les agriculteurs auront de nouvelles pistes à explorer, qu'il s'agisse de produire des ingrédients à base de plantes ou de recevoir des paiements au titre des services écosystémiques pour le carbone séquestré dans les terres réensauvagées.
Cette transition ouvrira également des perspectives sans précédent en matière de restauration de la nature et de réduction des émissions de carbone, en nous permettant de réensauvager de vastes étendues de terres actuellement utilisées pour l'alimentation du bétail et l'agriculture.
Un investissement audacieux ?
Les investissements audacieux, appelés "moonshot" en anglais, représentent des projets ambitieux et visionnaires qui visent à relever des défis sociétaux majeurs grâce à des innovations de rupture.
Inspirés par l'audace de l'alunissage d'Apollo, ces investissements nécessitent un engagement à long terme, un financement substantiel et une collaboration entre les secteurs public et privé.
Faire face à la pandémie
Lorsque la pandémie de COVID a frappé le monde, le scepticisme régnait quant à la possibilité de mettre au point un vaccin assez rapidement. Les gouvernements, les instituts de recherche et les sociétés pharmaceutiques ont investi des sommes considérables pour accélérer le calendrier et sauver des vies. Plusieurs vaccins ont été développés en un temps record. De tels investissements audacieux illustrent le pouvoir de l'effort collectif pour faire face aux crises mondiales urgentes.
Lutter contre le changement climatique
Les gouvernements et les entreprises du monde entier ont engagé des ressources pour passer des combustibles fossiles aux sources d'énergie propres. Les progrès réalisés dans les technologies solaire, éolienne, nucléaire et des batteries ont été rendus possibles grâce à des investissements audacieux, qui ont stimulé l'innovation et rendu l'énergie propre plus accessible et plus rentable.
Améliorer notre compréhension
Des investissements audacieux ont également joué un rôle essentiel dans notre compréhension croissante du monde. Les investissements liés à l'exploration de la lune ont conduit au développement des technologies de l'information, de la modélisation du climat, des données satellitaires, etc. Ces technologies ont rendu visibles des problèmes autrefois invisibles, tels que la dégradation de la couche d'ozone et le changement climatique. Ces domaines ont alimenté des avancées scientifiques révolutionnaires, permettant de relever des défis, de transformer des industries et d'améliorer des vies.
L'Europe a été un leader mondial dans la transition vers des technologies énergétiques propres, elle doit maintenant investir dans de nouvelles technologies alimentaires durables.
Des pays comme Singapour, le Canada, les États-Unis, Israël, le Japon et la Chine sont déjà à la pointe de la recherche, du développement et de la commercialisation de protéines durables.
Il est décourageant de voir l'Europe à la traîne, les principaux États membres retenant les investissements publics et envisageant même d'interdire la viande cultivée.
Nous ne pouvons pas nous permettre de répéter les erreurs du passé, où nous avons vu d'autres industries prospérer alors que nous étions à la traîne. La révolution des protéines est inévitable, et il s'agit maintenant d'une question de sécurité alimentaire fondamentale pour notre continent.
L'Europe doit retrouver sa place de pionnière et mener la révolution alimentaire.

Nous vous demandons de vous engager à investir immédiatement 25 milliards d'euros d'ici à 2030 pour stimuler le développement et la commercialisation d'une industrie européenne des protéines durables. Ce chiffre, bien qu'ambitieux, ne représente que 5 % des 500 milliards d'euros engagés dans le cadre du plan d'investissement du Pacte vert (Green Deal) à dépenser dans les industries vertes d'ici la même date, et fait pâle figure en comparaison des 420 milliards d'euros de fonds publics qui devraient être dépensés dans le cadre de la Politique agricole commune d'ici la fin de la décennie.
